I wanted to go away, but why is he stopping me?

He was my ex , we were together before for 9 years. Now he's courting someone. Id like to believe im ok now.. I subtly told him that its ok to be friends with him coz thats what he wanted, but i told him that once he's sure that he already loves the girl, he should tell me so i can make a graceful exit in his life. I told him i have to do that because all i wanted is for him to be happy,, his joy is my happiness, even if it means sacrificing my own. So i told him, if they're already together, she should be the one whos going to take care of him, look after him, not me anymore. But he said, even if the other girl becomes his girlfriend, why do i have to go away? I told him its awkard too for the girl to have me as a bestfriend. Im letting him be, giving way. Is that hard to comprehend? Guys, pls answer, cant you see that im doing it out of great unconditional love? but he doesnt want me to go away and leave his life. What was he thinking?He runs to me everytime he's in turmoil, well if he has a gf, he should run to her right? not me. How can i convince him that we shouldnt see each other anymore? Are guys really like that, wanting to have all for themselves and not consider others feelings...
