Use calculus to find the gradient of the curve y=4x^(-2), at A, where coordinates are (2,1)?

Am I just supposed to use the straight forward formula, Ax^(n-1) or am i supposed to draw the chord and work it out using the limits of the chord...it's 2 marks in an AS level paper
